What to Expect

San Carlos Beach offers a laid-back, coastal atmosphere perfect for both locals and visitors. The beach itself is relatively small, but its proximity to the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail makes it a great starting point for longer walks. You’ll often spot scuba divers entering the water, sea otters playing offshore, and sea lions sunbathing near the pier, all part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s vibrant ecosystem.

The paved paths, open lawn areas, and gentle sea breeze make this a comfortable, easy-going outing for dogs of all ages. Parking is paid, but convenient, with lots located directly next to the beach. There are also picnic tables, benches, and plenty of shade for resting after your walk.

Tips for Visiting

  • Keep your dog on leash to protect wildlife and respect local rules

  • Bring fresh water if you plan to stay on the sand (stations are on the trail, not the beach)

  • Paid parking is available right beside the beach

  • Visit during morning hours for cooler weather and calmer crowds

  • Take a walk north or south along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail for extended ocean views and dog amenities
