Hidden just north of downtown Monterey, Del Monte Beach is a local gem that offers the best of both worlds, easy access from the city and a wide, sandy shoreline where dogs (and their humans) can unwind to the sound of rolling waves. What to Expect
Del Monte Beach is part of Monterey State Beach, known for its soft sand, rolling dunes, and panoramic views of the bay. Access points are located off Del Monte Avenue, with trails leading through the dunes to the shoreline. While parking is paid, the beach is typically less crowded than nearby Old Fisherman’s Wharf or Cannery Row, offering a quieter experience for dogs that prefer open space over heavy foot traffic.
The dunes behind the beach feature wooden boardwalks and lookout points, making it a pleasant walk for both dogs and their owners. You’ll also find access to the Coastal Recreation Trail, where amenities like dog water stations and waste bags make it easy to keep your dog hydrated and the area clean.
Tips for Visiting
Bring a leash and waste bags, even though some are available nearby
Keep your dog close, strong currents and wildlife may be present
Pack fresh water if you plan to stay on the sand as there are no water sources on the beach itself
Visit in the morning or at sunset for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds
Park near the northern end of the beach to avoid paid parking
