Carmel River State Beach is a peaceful, picturesque stretch of coastline located where the Carmel River meets the Pacific Ocean. With sweeping ocean views, soft golden sand, and a tranquil lagoon frequented by migratory birds, it’s one of the most scenic and serene dog-friendly beaches on the Monterey Peninsula. Compared to the lively atmosphere of nearby Carmel Beach, Carmel River offers a more relaxed setting, perfect for quiet walks, beach play, or simply soaking in the natural beauty.

Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the beach, making it a great destination for dogs who enjoy long, leisurely strolls with their humans. The wide shoreline provides plenty of room to roam, while the gentle waves near the lagoon offer spots for a cautious splash. This beach’s calm energy and open space make it ideal for dogs of all ages and energy levels.

Dog-Friendly Highlights

  • Long, sandy shoreline perfect for walking, sniffing, and exploring

  • Gentle surf near the lagoon, great for dogs that enjoy water without rough waves

  • Convenient access and free parking near the main entrance

  • Garbage cans and poop bags available at parking areas

  • Restrooms available

  • No designated dog water stations, so be sure to bring your own fresh water and bowl

What to Expect

The beach sits beside the protected Carmel River Lagoon and Natural Preserve, where wildlife is abundant, especially migratory birds. Because of this sensitive habitat, all dogs must remain on leash at all times. There are no major amenities but the beach’s natural beauty more than makes up for it. The parking lot is small and fills up fast on weekends but is free, with pathways providing easy access from your car to the sand.

Tips for Visiting

  • Bring plenty of fresh water, there are no dog water fountains

  • Keep dogs leashed at all times to protect local wildlife and nesting birds

  • Avoid letting dogs swim in the lagoon itself, as currents can be unpredictable

  • Visit early morning or late afternoon for the most peaceful experience and best lighting for photos

  • Always clean up after your dog using the provided waste bins and bags

  • Turn your beach day into a coastal walk by exploring the Carmel Meadows Trail that connects to the south end of the beach
