The Asilomar Coast Trail, located at Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove, traces a scenic, ocean-front route hugging dunes, rocky coves, and native coastal vegetation. This walkable trail spans about 1 mile and is often paired with dune boardwalks and paths through restored dune habitats. It lies adjacent to the Asilomar Conference Grounds and crosses through forested shrubland and shoreline terrain, offering a beautiful balance between beach and land. Dogs are welcome on this trail and beach, but must remain on leash.

  • Rocky coves and intertidal zones provide rich scenery and marine life glimpses

  • Walk boardwalks along sensitive dune ecosystems

  • Easy trail with modest elevation changes

  • Marine life is strictly protected by the Asilomar State Marine Reserve

What to expect

As you walk along the Asilomar Coast Trail, expect a calm coastal experience framed by the sea and dunes. The path alternates between sandy stretches, wooden boardwalks, and compacted trail surfaces, with occasional crossings of beach access points. You’ll enjoy unobstructed views of the Pacific, exposed tide pools at low tide, and the soft crashing of waves below. The dunes and scrub vegetation buffer you from wind in some sections, while others are exposed, so conditions may change quickly. The trail is not long, making it ideal for a relaxed, scenic outing with your dog. It is typically quiet, especially outside peak tourist hours. With the marine area offshore protected, you’ll see abundant sea life, but please respect signs and regulations regarding wildlife and habitat.

Tips for visiting

  • Dogs must remain on leash at all times, both on the trail and the beach

  • There are no dog-specific water stations along the trail; carry water and a collapsible bowl

  • Some surfaces are sandy or wood-plank boardwalks, which can shift or be slippery

  • To get the most out of the tide pool exploration and more exposed coastal views, plan around low tide

  • Do not collect shells, disturb marine life, or remove anything from the tide pools
